Academic career paths are many and varied, and so far we have only covered some of the common routes taken. However, we would like to extend coverage to a wider range of academic career paths and include discussion of other relevant issues such as the impact of gender, disability or family responsibilities.

If you feel that your experience of trying to forge an academic career is not covered sufficiently here, or feel you have something more to add, please do share your story with us. This would help us to learn more about the realities of becoming an academic.  If you would be happy for us to pass on your wisdom to others (with your permission), please let us know.

Here some suggestions on what you can tell us, but feel free to add whatever you wish:

  • About you - your qualifications and career background so far.
  • Your goal - what academic position are you aiming for?
  • How many years has it taken you / have you been trying to become an academic?
  • What challenges have you faced and how have you overcome them?
  • What have you learned along the way?
  • Do you still want to become an academic, or are you considering alternatives?
  • Looking back on the route you have taken so far to becoming an academic, would you have done anything differently?
  • If you could go back in time, what advice about your career would you give to your younger self
  • What have been the turning points in your career so far?

Your story will be treated with utmost confidence. If we wish to quote you on the 'Academic Career' website, we will contact you to obtain your permission.  We look forward to hearing from you.
