An Academic Career

Do you enjoy research?

Even those academics focused primarily on teaching generally still do some form of research. You may not understand the appeal if you haven't yet done a final year project or dissertation, but that's when students often get hooked. Don't worry too much if you've had problems finding material or getting results in your project or dissertation. If you've enjoyed overcoming these challenges, you're starting to get bitten by the research bug.

Can you communicate your ideas effectively - and defend them in debate?

You don't need to be an extrovert, but you do need to develop a talent for clearly expressing your ideas orally and on paper. Academics have to test their research by subjecting it to rigorous academic scrutiny, including defending it face-to-face at conferences and seminars. Many successful academics still find this nerve wracking but you need to develop at least a veneer of self confidence to cope.
